More than four years after becoming the only G7 country to sign up, Italy has pulled out of China’s massive Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, a government source announced on December 6.

Three days ago, Beijing was informed of the much-anticipated decision, as initially reported by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Rome has withdrawn, an Italian government source confirmed to AFP, although neither side has released an official statement.

The only information provided by the source was that it was carried out to “keep channels of political dialogue open.”
