Court cameras captured the incredible moments on Wednesday when a felon in Las Vegas who was set to receive a sentence for a severe offence jumped over the bench and attacked the judge.
When Deobra Redden, 30, went towards Judge Mary Kay Holthus and slammed her against the wall during his appearance in Clark County District Court to be sentenced on an attempted battery charge, a scuffle broke out between him and court officials, resulting in one person needing medical attention at a nearby hospital.
Redden will appear in court again on Thursday to answer to several new felony accusations of battery and battery against a protected person, which includes the judge and court employees, as a result of his violent outburst.
The attack happened at the Regional Justice Centre in Las Vegas at approximately 11:00 a.m. (local time).
Numerous court, jail, and courtroom employees grappled 30-year-old Redden to the ground behind the judge’s bench.
After being taken into custody, he was lodged at the Clark County Detention Centre. There, he was charged with multiple felonies, one of which was battery on a protected person, which included the judge and court officials.
Chief County District Attorney Richard Scow, who prosecuted Redden in a case arising from an arrest made last year on charges that he had attacked a person with a baseball bat, stated, “It happened so fast it was hard to know what to do.”
